Russell Westbrook Retires After 18 NBA Seasons

Russell Westbrook Retires After 18 NBA Seasons

It’s the end of an era.

After 18 NBA seasons, Russell Westbrook has officially called it a career — and what a ride it was.

From thunderous dunks and coast-to-coast sprints to triple-doubles that became almost routine, Westbrook built a career around one thing: full speed, all the time.

The Triple-Double King

Westbrook retires as the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 209.

Yes, 209.

He also set the single-season record with 42 triple-doubles in 2016-17, the same season he was named NBA MVP.

His résumé is packed:

  • 9-time NBA All-Star

  • 2-time NBA scoring champion

  • 3-time NBA assists leader

  • 2-time NBA All-Star Game MVP

  • Olympic gold medalist

  • Member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team

By the time he retired, Westbrook ranked among the NBA’s all-time leaders in both points and assists.

Not bad for a player whose style could basically be described as: see the rim, attack the rim.

Oklahoma City Will Always Be a Big Part of the Story

Westbrook entered the NBA as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and spent his first 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

That’s where he became a superstar, an MVP and one of the most recognizable players of his generation.

His NBA journey later took him to Houston, Washington, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver and Sacramento.

He finished his career with the Sacramento Kings, averaging 15.2 points and 6.7 assists per game in his final season.

One of the NBA’s Most Unforgettable Careers

Love his game or debate his game, one thing is hard to argue: Russell Westbrook was never boring.

He played with energy, emotion and intensity every night, and his triple-double record could stand for a very long time.

For basketball fans, his retirement gives us one more reason to look back at the teams, jerseys and moments that defined nearly two decades of NBA basketball.
